Afro-Caribbean Business Network | Fireside Chat with Savior Joseph, CEO of Tribe Network and General Partner, Tribe Ventures | Tuesday, October 20, 2026 | Online
Every founder who pitches an investor is asking the same silent question: what do they actually want to see? The deck matters, and so do the numbers. But experienced investors are also betting on something harder to measure: you, your team and your ability to execute.
Understanding what investors look for in founders is one of the most valuable things an entrepreneur can learn. That is especially true for Black founders, who receive less than 1% of venture capital dollars, according to Tribe Ventures. In short, when the door opens, you need to be ready to walk through it.
So on Tuesday, October 20, the Afro-Caribbean Business Network continues the Black Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Conference 2026 with a virtual fireside chat featuring Savior Joseph, CEO of Tribe Network and General Partner at Tribe Ventures, on building successful organizations, strong teams and networks, and what investors look for in entrepreneurs.
Who Is Savior Joseph?
Savior brings more than two decades of executive experience. Earlier in his career, he led a digital marketing agency and worked with the United Nations. Later, he held senior roles in Canada’s cannabis industry, including Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Aurora Cannabis and President of Breathing Green Solutions.
In addition, he mentors founders at the Creative Destruction Lab across several sites and was named the CDL Prime Stream Mentor of the Year in 2023. A former varsity basketball player, he brings a team-first leadership style to everything he does.
Savior was the founding Board Chair of Tribe Network in 2021. Then, in January 2026, he stepped in as Interim CEO of Tribe Network and Managing Partner of Tribe Ventures when founder Alfred Burgesson left to serve as a senior advisor in the federal Office of the Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation.
Inside Tribe Network and Tribe Ventures
Tribe Network is a national nonprofit supporting Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour entrepreneurs in innovation-driven sectors. Today, its community includes more than 2,500 members, who have created hundreds of jobs and raised millions in capital.
Meanwhile, Tribe Ventures is an early-stage fund that invests in pre-seed and seed-stage technology companies led by underrepresented founders. Its focus areas include tech for good, education, climate, health, financial technology, and robotics. On average, it invests about $250,000 at pre-seed and $500,000 at seed, and its portfolio includes roughly 30 companies.
Why This Conversation Matters for the Black Community
1. Investors bet on teams, not just ideas
Ideas are common, but strong execution is rare. Consequently, investors want to see a team with the right mix of skills, commitment, and trust. Savior’s team-first philosophy is a reminder that who you build with may matter as much as what you build.
2. Networks create deal flow
Most venture deals begin with a warm introduction. Unfortunately, Black founders are often outside those networks. That is why communities like Tribe Network and ACBN matter: they create the relationships that lead to meetings, mentors, and money. (Read our Day 3 spotlight on Black tech founders in Canada.)
3. Talent is one of the Four Strikes
At ACBN, we name the Four Strikes™ that hold Black entrepreneurs back, and the second is difficulty attracting talent. Building a strong team is hard when you cannot yet pay market salaries. Therefore, founders need creative strategies, like equity, partnerships and mission-driven hiring, to attract great people.
4. Investor-ready is a process
No one becomes investor-ready overnight. This is where ACBN’s 3C Framework™ comes in: Clarity → Connection → Capital. First, get clear on your business model, traction, and financials. Next, connect with mentors, peers, and investor networks. Finally, choose the right capital for your stage, whether that is a microloan, a growth loan or venture investment.
Want to be ready when investors call? ACBN’s Growth Pathway program walks you through the 3C Framework™ with coaching, community and a direct route to funding. We are welcoming 100 entrepreneurs into the program.
5. Not every business needs venture capital
Finally, venture capital is right for some businesses and wrong for many others. In fact, most small businesses grow best with loans and revenue rather than giving up equity. Knowing the difference, and choosing on purpose, is one of the smartest decisions a founder can make. Frequently Asked Questions
What do investors look for in founders?
Generally, investors look for a strong and committed team, a large market, early traction, a clear business model and a founder who is coachable and resilient. In addition, they want to see that you understand your numbers and your competition.
Is venture capital right for my business?
Venture capital suits businesses that can grow very quickly and very large, usually in technology. For most small businesses, loans, grants, and revenue are better options, because you keep full ownership. ACBN’s Growth Pathway can help you decide which path fits.
