  • Securing Funding for Community Projects: Crafting Effective Grant Proposals

Securing Funding for Community Projects: Crafting Effective Grant Proposals

Securing funding for community projects can be a challenging endeavor, but with the right approach, crafting effective grant proposals can greatly increase the chances of success. A well-crafted grant proposal is a crucial tool in not only attracting the attention of potential funding sources, but also conveying the importance and potential impact of the community project. To create a professional grant proposal, it is important to first thoroughly research and understand the objectives and requirements of the funding organization. This will ensure that the proposal is tailor-made to meet their specific criteria and align with their goals.

Crafting an effective grant proposal also involves clearly articulating the community project’s objectives, outcomes, and anticipated impact. It is essential to provide a detailed plan of action, including a timeline and budget, to give the funder confidence in the project’s feasibility and sustainability. Additionally, including measurable indicators and evaluation methods will demonstrate the commitment to accountability and success.

A professional grant proposal should also highlight the community’s capacity and expertise in executing the project. This can be achieved through showcasing relevant past experience, partnerships, and the involvement of key stakeholders. Demonstrating a strong and diverse support network will instill confidence in the funder that the project has the necessary resources to succeed.

Furthermore, it is important to clearly communicate the community’s needs and why funding for this project is essential. Providing evidence of the project’s potential long-term benefits and its alignment with the funder’s priorities will help make a compelling case for support.

In conclusion, securing funding for community projects requires the crafting of effective grant proposals. By thoroughly researching the funding organization, clearly articulating the project’s objectives and outcomes, highlighting community capacity, and making a compelling case for support, the chances of securing funding can be greatly increased. A well-crafted grant proposal is an essential tool in not only attracting funding but also in showcasing the potential impact and importance of community projects.

  • First-of-its-kind Certificate for Black Founders in Clean Technology brings Peel’s entrepreneurial powerhouses together.

First-of-its-kind Certificate for Black Founders in Clean Technology brings Peel’s entrepreneurial powerhouses together.

A groundbreaking new certificate program aimed at supporting aspiring Black founders in the Clean Technology sector is set to launch at Sheridan.

A joint effort between the Afro Caribbean Business Network (ACBN) and Sheridan’s EDGE Entrepreneurship Hub, with support from the Pilon School of Business and Continuing and Professional Studies (CAPS), Black Founders in Clean Technology will be delivered in a primarily virtual format from October 4 – December 6. ACBN is offering up to 10 scholarships for Black founders and aspiring entrepreneurs to help remove barriers to participation.

As the demand for sustainable and innovative solutions in the cleantech industry grows, the first-of-its-kind program provides a platform for Black entrepreneurs to thrive and make a significant impact in the sector.

Black Founders in Clean Technology focuses on engaging participants in an Afrocentric and non-traditional approach to learning. Upon completion of the program, participants will have examined existing business ideas within the cleantech industry, reviewed the market potential of their own start-up ideas, crafted compelling value propositions and developed connections that sustain continued personal and professional growth.

In-person program components will be hosted at Sheridan’s EDGE Entrepreneurship Hub, located at the Davis campus in Brampton. The program will be delivered in a learning environment that aims to honour the personal experiences of students and works to build their business networks through reflective and group coaching activities.

“EDGE is proud to work with ACBN to support the growth of Black founders within clean technology. Our goal is to see new Black-led cleantech at the forefront of this work that’s so crucial for our planet’s sustainability,” says Renee Devereaux, Director of Sheridan EDGE.

The Black Founders in Cleantech program builds upon the ongoing collaborative relationship between educators at Sheridan and ACBN. To date, the partnership has yielded a collaborative research project and continued development of a best practice guide for Black business owners. Sheridan has also co-hosted some of ACBN’s flagship events including the Legacy Symposium and Federal Black Ecosystem Conference.

Ryan Knight, President of ACBN, said, “While working with Black entrepreneurs, we saw gaps in business infrastructure, mental health support, intergenerational connections and representation in the cleantech industry. ACBN decided to tackle these gaps through the Federal Black Entrepreneurship Program, mandated to support Black entrepreneurs. The findings of our Labour Market study identified a lack of Black founders in the cleantech industry. We combined forces with our long-standing partner, Sheridan’s EDGE, to design an introductory certificate in Cleantech to expose Black founders to the industry. We hope to see Black founders gain a deeper understanding of the industry and start businesses in the sector.”

Black Founders in Cleantech was developed and will be led by Sheridan professor Shereen Ashman, along with guest speakers who are experienced clean technology entrepreneurs. The program is designed to not just provide theoretical foundations for participants, but also provide learnings from active practitioners who will share real-world examples.

“It’s been my honour and joy to develop learning experiences that centre Black identity alongside ancestral principles and practices that value nature, community care and collaborative edge,” said Ashman. “I look forward to playing a supportive role in their entrepreneurial journeys to bring about innovations that are good for people and the planet.”

The program has 15 spaces available to the public. Early registration is encouraged to secure a spot. Register for the Black Founders in Clean Technology program.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO, CANADA, February 17, 2023

More than 100 Black community leaders, entrepreneurs, business owners, and professionals from across Ontario are slated to attend the fourth annual Legacy Symposium sponsored by Alterna Savings from February 24-25 at Sheridan’s Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga.

The discovery sessions — led by the Afro-Caribbean Business Network (ACBN), Sheridan’s Pilon School of Business (PSB), and EDGE Entrepreneurship Hub — have been designed to foster dialogue within the key areas of business: obtaining finance, attracting the right customers, bringing key people onto your team and optimizing business processes.

Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with industry leaders, access exclusive networking opportunities, learn strategies for building a sustainable business, and enhance their operations during virtual and in-person conference sessions. Keynote speakers include Dr. George C. Fraser, CEO and Founder of FraserNet, Inc., President of FraserNation, LLC, and Bryan Duarte, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at BlackTech Capital and Founder and CEO of Enliten.

The Legacy Symposium builds upon a two-year collaborative research project led by Dr. Brian Chama, PSB Associate Dean, between Sheridan and the ACBN to identify the needs of Black entrepreneurs and develop meaningful recommendations and resources to help increase their business capacity. The partnership includes data collection led by a Sheridan student researcher from the PSB, the development of a best practices guide for business owners, and the creation of a training curriculum and a mentoring program.

“The programming for the Legacy Symposium has been directly informed by learnings from our research project and will strive to provide meaningful engagement for participants,” says Ryan O’Neil Knight, Founder, and Executive Director of the ACBN, Founder, and CEO of Detailing Knights and a Sheridan business alumnus and member of the Sheridan Pilon School of Business Hall of Fame.

“ACBN has worked tirelessly to support and champion Black entrepreneurs in our region and EDGE has been a proud long-time collaborator,” says Renee Devereaux, Director, Entrepreneurship and Changemaking at Sheridan EDGE. “We’re thrilled to be part of this annual symposium as business leaders gather to explore investment readiness and amplify success.”

The Legacy Symposium sponsored by Alterna Savings is one of many events hosted by Sheridan during Black History Month. Learn more about the symposium including full program and registration details.

A penetrating analysis of the current status of Canadian Black labour to shine a light on the potential for Black empowerment in the labour force.

BRAMPTON, ON, CANADA, April 25, 2022/EINPresswire.com/ — A first of its kind study is being launched by the Afro Caribbean Business Network commissioning the services of a Black, Canadian Research firm Dunn, Pierre, Barnett and Company Limited (DPBA). https://dpbglobal.com/ DPBA has been contracted to execute and conduct this study. This survey will collect pertinent information on the Black Labour Market in Ontario, providing insight into economic trends, employment rate, and the gaps in skills across all sectors by geographical areas and gender. The study will also involve collecting and analysing relevant statistical data and qualitative information regarding the Black Labour force in Southern Ontario. It will also review the black residential labour force, migration and statistical data related to regular and irregular labour migration to determine the link between the Black Labour Market and human resource planning, market needs and availability of skills and vocational training, and educational and other relevant programmes.

The Afro Caribbean Business Network (ACBN) https://acbncanada.com/ is a Brampton, Ontario based Not-for-Profit Organization dedicated to providing Black businesses with the resources needed to start, grow and scale up their companies; ACBN is proud to be a partner in commissioning the first Black Labour Market Needs Assessment for Ontario. This Rapid Assessment survey attempts to shine a light on some of the deep-rooted Labour and Employment issues currently facing Black communities in Canada, focusing on Southern Ontario. With this information, ACBN and the broader Black Entrepreneurship Ecosystem will be in better position to support the Black businesses that are in their network.

Upon completion, the analytics gathered by Dunn, Pierre, Barnett and Company Ltd will provide helpful information in assessing the challenges within industries, which ACBN can then use to inform policymakers to develop interventions that will adequately address the skills shortage of the labour market and enable future planning.

This study would be the first of its kind to investigate the Black Labour Market from a scientific perspective based on international benchmarks using ISCO, ISIC and NIACS codes according to International Labour Organisation mandates.

This survey was able to commence on April 20, 2022, and is expected to last for no more than three months ending on July 19, 2022.

This project will be spearheaded by DPBA’s very own Dr. Justine Pierre, Labour Market and Migration consultant, in association with Co-founders and Co-Executive Directors of ACBN, Mr. Ryan Knight and Mrs. Nicola Harris, ultimately aiming to increase the number of black entrepreneurs in Canada more specifically in southern Ontario with the expectation to expand this research Nationally.
