Behind almost every successful entrepreneur is someone who believed in them early. A mentor who answered the late-night question, pointed out the blind spot or simply said, “You can do this.”
Yet many Black founders build without that support. That is why business mentorship for Black entrepreneurs is not a nice extra. In fact, it is often the difference between a business that burns out and one that lasts.
So on Friday, October 16, the Afro-Caribbean Business Network continues the Black Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Conference 2026 with a virtual fireside chat featuring Chris-Beth Cowie, Founder of Empowered 4X, on her entrepreneurial journey and building sustainable businesses through mentorship, community, purpose and impact.
Who Is Chris-Beth Cowie?
Chris-Beth moved from Trinidad and Tobago to Brampton at age 13. Like many young immigrants, she faced real challenges in her early years. However, a teaching trip to Paraguay at 16 changed everything. When a student told her, “Teacher, because you were here, you made a difference,” she found her lifelong calling: social impact.
Later, while working in Bolivia in 2009, she discovered social enterprise as a powerful tool against poverty. Since then, she has turned personal setbacks into fuel for building community. Along the way, she was named one of Brampton’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2018.
Today, Chris-Beth wears many hats. For example, she has taught at Sheridan College’s EDGE incubator, directed the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program and hosts BizGrams, a show where entrepreneurs share their stories and business lessons. She also serves as Programs Manager at ACBN, helping entrepreneurs move through our programs every day.
Inside Empowered 4X
Chris-Beth started what became Empowered 4X as a speaking and training business, then expanded it in 2019 into a full business development centre with coworking and event space in Brampton. Its mission is to simplify access to entrepreneurship and create spaces that elevate systematically excluded entrepreneurs.
Beyond workspace, Empowered 4X offers consulting in digital marketing, business planning and grant writing, along with training in social enterprise, sales and mental health first aid. As a social enterprise, it reinvests profits into youth entrepreneurship. By its own count, it has served more than 4,000 people through programs and events and facilitated over 250 workshops.

Every mistake a mentor helps you avoid saves time, money and stress. Consequently, founders with mentors tend to make better decisions earlier. For Black entrepreneurs, who often lack family or industry networks in business, a mentor can open doors that would otherwise stay closed. 2. Physical space builds real community
At ACBN, we name the Four Strikes™ that hold Black entrepreneurs back. The first is small teams: most Black-owned businesses have fewer than five people. Fortunately, a shared workspace means you never have to build alone. Instead, you are surrounded by other founders who share leads, advice and encouragement.
3. Sustainability beats speed
Many businesses grow fast and fade just as quickly. Chris-Beth’s focus, by contrast, is on businesses that last, built on purpose, sound systems and strong relationships. In the long run, sustainable growth builds far more wealth than a quick spike.
